How should I prepare for my first acupuncture session?Have a light meal a few hours before your appointment can help stabilise your blood sugar levels. Avoid arriving on an empty stomach or right after a heavy meal. Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose loose and comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the areas where acupuncture needles will be inserted. This ensures both your comfort and the acupuncturist's ease of access.

What does the initial consultation involve? To have a better understanding of your health I will ask you about your current and past health, medical history, as well as your daily habits and general wellbeing. Traditional Chinese Medicine addresses your wellbeing as a whole person, not only your symptoms or illnesses. In each session I will be taking your pulse, checking any tender or problem areas and looking at your tongue.

What should I expect during the acupuncture session? The treatment involves insertion of very fine, sterilised disposable needles into specific points on the body. Needles may be retained between 20 to 30 minutes or simply inserted and then removed. The needle sensation may vary from a tingling to a dull ache or heaviness subsiding within seconds. As well as needling, I may also introduce other techniques such as moxibustion, cupping, electro acupuncture or ear acupuncture.

How many treatments do I need? The number of sessions depends on few factors including the severity of the condition or symptoms, age of the patient and the patient's general health. Some patients can begin to feel improvements straight away, for others the cumulative effects of treatment can take a few sessions to significantly improve the patient's symptoms or conditions. A typical course of treatments might include 6 to 12 visits at weekly intervals.
